Voluntary membership of the many societies and participation in extra-curricular activities is encouraged as an important part of a pupil's time at Buckley.
* Adventure Training
The program is delivered primarily through sessions which take place every Wednesday afternoon. The pupils work in small groups and undertake a different activity each week. Pupils are exposed to a wide range of activities; e.g. first aid, life saving in the swimming pool, climbing on our climbing wall, orienteering, litter patrol, conservation, team building tasks, kayaking and camp craft.
* Amnesty International
The Amnesty International Group meets weekly to write letters on behalf of political prisoners in many countries. This is an effective way of promoting human rights, as authorities take notice when hundreds of letters land on their doormats. At our weekly meetings we also read and discuss Amnesty briefings on human rights abuses in many countries. Recent campaigns have focused on killings of street children in Brazil, violence against women, and torture in a number of countries.

* Conservation
The Conservation Group meets on Wednesday afternoons as part of the wider community service activities. Its activities include building and repairing footpaths, building bridges, clearing fallen trees, planting and protecting seedlings in the woodlands and hedgerows on the property (with the necessary aftercare), clearing drainage lines and much more.
* Debating
Debating is an important confidence-boosting skill
* Drama
Two major school productions are staged each year together with a variety of smaller scale events. These present opportunities for involvement in backstage work, lighting and props as well as the drama itself.
* International Club
The International Club is primarily a group for overseas pupils who meet weekly to discuss current affairs and issues of interest such as learning more about Scotland whilst allowing us to celebrate the rich diversity which exists within the Academy. It is a great opportunity for non-native speakers to practice their English but also a chance for them to share their culture with others. We organize events within the school such as a Chinese New Year celebration and also regular outings during weekends to places of interest in Scotland
* Munro Club
The Munro Club gives pupils the chance to get away from it all, and lift their eyes unto the hills. It generally meets 3 times a term on Sundays. The mountain and route are chosen to suit the group and the weather forecast. This might be Cairngorm with ice axes and crampons in winter, scrambling on the Aonach Eagach above Glencoe in summer or simply striding over the heather of Beinn Ime in Arrochar. Pupils are unlikely to climb the same mountain twice in their time at Buckley! For those who are not sure if it is for them, our equipment store can lend most items for outings. Pupils can sign up for any individual outing, with no further commitment.
* Opera Club
The Opera Club aims to introduce pupils to opera, chiefly through trips to Scottish Opera at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. We also attend performances of visiting companies and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Dramatic Art; the latter occasion is often a highlight of the season and particularly inspiring in view of the youth, enthusiasm and talent of the cast.
* Piping
There are two Pipe Bands, both of which compete in school competitions. The ‘A’ band wears full ceremonial dress whilst the ‘B’ band wears day dress.
* Soul Space
Soul Space meets every Tuesday at 5pm in the Chaplain's House. Pupils are offered a cup of tea and cake before settling down to studying a bible passage. The teaching is not prescriptive and is often led by the pupils themselves. Some are committed Christians, others are inquiring about Christian faith, but all are welcome. Pupils and the helpers are then offered a time of prayer in which concerns are expressed and prayed for if requested. The time ends with some worship songs chosen by the pupils. It is a time and space for friendship and fellowship, a time for enjoying each others company and spending time with God.
